Spring Test Valve
Full-bore spring-closed test valve operated by string movement
Description
The spring test valve is a full-bore downhole shut-in tool operated by lifting and lowering the string. It is used for testing and completion in open holes and cased holes.
Features
- Up-and-down string movement controls opening and closing of the test valve — simple and reliable
- Spring force keeps the test valve closed while running in
- When the valve opens, the string drops freely about 25 mm [1 in] with a slight vibration, giving a clear open-well indication at surface
- A fluid sample at formation pressure can be obtained at the end of the flow period
Operation
To open, slack off string weight; after a delay the string drops about 1 in, the tester opens and formation fluid starts to flow. To close, pick up the string above the free point and then slack off weight. To reopen, pick up above the free point and slack off again; after a while the string drops about 1 in freely and the well opens again. Repeat to open and close the well multiple times.
