Extension Joint

Square-mandrel joint giving 550 mm of free stroke for tester operation

Back to slip joints

Description

This square-mandrel joint is usually connected between the tester and the packer. Its extension stroke gives the tester free travel for lifting and lowering operations, which makes opening and closing the well more stable.

Features

  • Square mandrel design: high strength, withstands high torque
  • Provides 550 mm [21.7 in] of extension stroke
  • Several groups of O-rings for stable sealing

Operation

The joint is extended while running in. When the packer is set, after 550 mm of free stroke, the extension joint transfers string weight to the packer to set it and open the tester. When the string is picked up to close the well, the joint extends, giving the tester 550 mm of stroke without unsetting the packer. Throughout the job, every lift-and-lower cycle has 550 mm of free stroke, which makes opening and closing the well more stable.
