FAVO Hydraulic Packer
Hydraulic-set retrievable packer for deviated and horizontal wells
Description
The FAVO hydraulic packer is set hydraulically and unset by picking up the tubing. It is especially suited to high-angle deviated and horizontal holes that mechanical and wireline-set packers cannot reach. After setting, it holds differential pressure in both directions. It is widely used in single-zone and multi-zone acid fracturing.
Features
- Hydraulic slips independent of the packer body expand into the casing when the packer sets, anchoring the tubing and preventing movement when the ball seat is knocked out
- Full-opening design simplifies the operating program and increases efficiency
- Two pressure transmission passages and a unique ring-groove design improve pressure transmission
- Lug protection improves the heat and pressure resistance of the packing element
- Pressure port in the main mandrel quickly connects casing and tubing when unsetting, equalizing pressure across the elements
- Fully threaded setting shear pins stay in the packer after shearing and cannot drop into the well
- Internal pressure-test lock key allows surface testing of the packer up to working pressure
- Extra-strength hydraulic slips prevent the packer from moving up
- Setting shear pins and unsetting pins are installed by quantity; maximum unsetting force up to 300 kN [67,400 lbf], minimizing the risk of sudden unsetting
Operation
To set, drop a ball and apply pressure in the tubing. At a set pressure the starter shear pin is sheared; continued pressure moves the piston and lock mechanism down to compress the packing element and expand the mechanical slips. Apply setting pressure in stages until the slips and element are fully set; the lock mechanism locks them in position, and the hydraulic slips expand into the casing to anchor the tubing.
To unset, pick up the tubing directly to shear the unsetting pin. The bypass port in the center mandrel moves up and connects with the casing passage, equalizing the pressure above and below the elements. Continued pulling retracts the element and mechanical slips.
