MRO Storm Valve

Temporary well shut-in valve for storms and surface maintenance

Description

This valve is usually used in offshore operations to close the well temporarily when a storm is forecast or surface equipment needs maintenance. It is usually installed above the packer: the packer seals the annulus between tubing and casing, and the valve seals the tubing bore, so that both annulus and bore of the well are sealed.

Features

  • The well is closed and released, or opened and reattached, by picking up, slacking off and rotating the string — simple and reliable operation
  • Large-section sealing structures with several sealing rings give more reliable sealing
  • Elastic claws and anti-over-torque ring make release and reattachment more reliable

Operation

The storm valve is open when run in the well. To close the well and release, rotate the string to the left several turns. To open the well and reattach, connect the recovery nipple to the string, run it into the MRO storm valve and rotate the string to the right several turns. Downhole, about 20 turns of string rotation are needed to close/release or open/reattach.
