Releasing Device

Ball-operated release for perforating guns in completion strings

Back to safety joints

Description

The releasing device is used together with a packer and perforating gun in completion operations so that the following operations run smoothly after perforating: the perforating gun can be released and the well put directly on production. It can also be used in other operations that require a release.

Structure & operation

The releasing device consists of an upper adapter, sealing case, operating mandrel, lock sub, shear pins and other parts. While running in, the shear pins keep the device in a safe state in which it cannot release.

To release, drop a steel ball from the wellhead. When the ball lands on the ball seat at the top of the operating mandrel, apply tubing pressure to shear the pins. The operating mandrel moves down and pushes the lock fingers of the lock sub inward, and the operating mandrel and lock sub are released together with the sealing case.
