Setting Ballseat

Plugs the tubing so that pressure can be applied to set a hydraulic packer

Back to completion tools

Description

The setting ballseat is usually used with a hydraulic packer to plug the tubing bore, so that pressure can be applied inside the tubing to set the packer.

Two ballseat structures are available. With the fixed ballseat, the ball and ballseat drop down together after the shear pin is sheared. With the spring-ratchet ballseat, the spring ratchet opens after the shear pin is sheared and releases the ball, which drops down. The type can be chosen as required.

Operation

While running in, the ballseat keeps full bore to allow circulation. When needed, a ball is dropped from the wellhead; after it lands in the ballseat, pressure is applied inside the tubing, the shear pin is sheared and the ballseat drops down. The tubing returns to full bore and the following operations can continue.
