Hydraulic Locking Joint

Hydrostatic hold-down that keeps the packer set while the tester is cycled

Back to auxiliary tools

Description

The hydraulic locking joint is a separate locking system for cased-hole testing and is connected directly below the tester. After the packer is set, the tester is operated by lifting and lowering the string, and lifting could unset the packer. Hydrostatic pressure acting on the hydraulic area of the locking joint produces an upward force against the tester and a downward locking force — equivalent to adding drill collars above the packer — so that the packer stays set.
