Open Hole Packer — Metal Cup Type

Retrievable weight-set open-hole test packer with metal-cup element support

Back to packers

Description

The open-hole packer is a mechanically set, retrievable packer used for open-hole string tests.

This version resists extrusion: a stack of metal cups at the bottom of the rubber element confines its extrusion. After slotting, the metal cups take the form of petals, reducing the diameter of the support plate; when setting force is applied, the metal cups flatten out to reduce the sealing clearance between the borehole wall and the packer.

Operation

The open-hole packer is set by slacking off string weight and released by picking up the string. It can be set directly on bottom; to hang it at a required depth, it is used with the side wall anchor.
